Hit Splitwise’s daily expense limit? Here are your options

Splitwise’s free plan caps how many expenses you can add each day. On a normal week you may never notice. On a trip or moving day you can hit it before lunch. Here’s how the limit works and what you can do about it.

What the daily limit is

Splitwise added a daily expense limit to its free plan. Its help centre currently says free users can add up to four expenses each day, and that a Splitwise Pro subscription removes the limit. Splitwise explains that paid subscriptions are what fund the free service.

Limits like this change over time, so check Splitwise’s own help article for the current details before you plan around a number.

When you’ll hit it

Day to day, four expenses is plenty for most people. The limit bites on days when lots of small costs land at once: trips, a house move, a wedding, or the first week in a new flat.

Take three friends on a weekend away with 14 shared costs: 4 on Friday, 7 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday. If one person logs everything, Friday just fits, but three of Saturday’s seven have to wait until Sunday. Sunday then has six to log, so two more slip to Monday. By the time it’s all in, people have forgotten who paid for what.

Your options

1

Wait for the reset

The allowance resets daily. Keep a note of the extra costs on your phone and add them the next day. It works, but it’s easy to lose track on a busy trip.

2

Share the logging

Splitwise’s help article suggests asking a friend to add an expense for you, set as paid by you. In the weekend example, if each friend logs what they paid, Saturday’s seven might split three, two and two, and everything fits.

3

Combine small costs

Group small things into one entry. Coffee $12, snacks $9, parking $15 and water $4 become one “Saturday small stuff” expense of $40, or $13.33 each for three people. The trade-off is less detail, and it only works when everyone shared all of it.

4

Upgrade to Splitwise Pro

Pro removes the daily limit and adds features such as receipt scanning and currency conversion. If you use Splitwise a lot and like it, that’s the most direct fix.

5

Try a different app

If you mainly want to log a busy day without waiting or paying, another app may fit better. That’s where Duesy comes in.

How Duesy’s free plan works

Duesy’s free plan also has a daily allowance, so it isn’t unlimited. The difference is what happens when you reach it.

  • Free entries every day. Expenses and income you add count towards the day’s free entries, and the allowance resets daily.
  • Never locked out. When today’s free entries are used, a short rewarded ad unlocks the next one. Each ad adds one more entry for that day, so a busy Saturday still gets logged on Saturday.
  • Pro removes ads and limits. Duesy Pro is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the US, priced in local currency elsewhere. It also adds receipt scanning, currency conversion and the AI assistant.
  • Trip Pass for one group. A Trip Pass is $2.99 for one group for 30 days and unlocks travel features such as receipt scanning and currency conversion for that group. It doesn’t remove the daily entry allowance; Pro does.

Splitting itself works the same way you’re used to: groups, shared expenses in any currency, and a “fewer payments” plan when it’s time to settle. You can share a group by link or QR, including over WhatsApp.

Which option fits you

  • You rarely add more than a few expenses a day. The Splitwise free plan probably covers you; share the logging on the odd busy day.
  • You use Splitwise daily and like it. Splitwise Pro is the simplest fix, since your history and friends are already there.
  • You hit the limit on trips and busy weeks, and don’t want a subscription. An app with a different free model, such as Duesy’s ad-unlocked entries, may suit you better.
  • Your group is spread across countries. Look closely at how each app handles currencies, because that matters more than the daily limit once you settle up.

Switching from Splitwise

Switching is easy. Settle up or note where each balance stands in Splitwise, then add what people owe you now in Duesy and carry on from there. It takes a minute or two for most friends and groups.

Duesy doesn’t copy your past Splitwise expenses across. Your old records stay in Splitwise if you need to look something up.

If you want to see how the free plan feels on a busy day, the easiest test is your next trip. More on how the two apps compare in Duesy as a Splitwise alternative.

Questions

How many expenses can I add per day on Splitwise for free?

Splitwise’s help centre currently says free users can add up to four expenses each day, and that Splitwise Pro removes the limit. Limits can change, so check Splitwise’s help page for the latest.

Can a friend add expenses for me on Splitwise?

Yes. Splitwise’s help article suggests a friend can add the expense and set it as paid by you, so the balance is still right.

Is Duesy unlimited for free?

No. The free plan gives you free entries every day. When they’re used, a short rewarded ad unlocks the next entry, so you’re never locked out. Duesy Pro removes ads and limits.

Can I import my Splitwise data into Duesy?

No, Duesy doesn’t import Splitwise data. Switching is still quick: add what each friend or group owes you now and carry on from there. Your old records stay in Splitwise if you need to look something up.

Does Duesy work for trips in different currencies?

Yes. Each expense keeps the currency it was paid in, and balances are settled per currency. See how to split trip expenses in multiple currencies for a worked example.
